Education and Training

1964 He met his mentor and step-father, Mr ARD Dey, who taught him art appreciation via his extensive art library and private collection of SA masters: Gordon Forster, Alexis Preller, Francois Krige etc.

1965 Private classes with South African artist Cecil Skotnes.

1967 Studied the masters: Rembrandt, the Impressionists, Daumier etc. by copying works from books. Read ‘Indaba, My Children’ Africa Genesis.

1970-1973 Studied graphic design and industrial design at the Johannesburg College of Art, where he came under the influences of drawing masters Ivor Kruger and Phil Botha

1983-1989 Night courses in figure painting and drawing at Ruth Prowse Art School under South African artist, Ryno Swart.

1989-2001 Life classes and art sessions, twice weekly at The Artist’s Co-op.


1974 Finished art and design in print and packaging.

1981 Worked as a finished artist and then designer at Janice Ashby Design Studios. Packaging for liquors, cosmetics and foods.

1987 Insurance and financial packaging design management.

1998 Began his full time career as a visual artist.

1998 Won a contract with Triple Trust Organisation to design, illustrate and produce a children’s educational package “Poppit”.

2001 Portrait commission in Amsterdam.

1987 Group exhibition at the Grahamstown University Art Museum. Sell out.

1990 – 1998 Group exhibitions at Hout Street Gallery Summer Salons in Paarl.

1999 Solo exhibition at Chris Crake Gallery, Johannesburg. Sold.

1999 Publication in Habitat interiors and life style magazine, April issue.

2003 Submitted a work to The Royal Academy annual exhibition, which was duly rejected.

2003 Group exhibition at John Bloxham Gallery, London.

2004 Group of Three exhibition at Dorp Street Gallery, Stellenbosch.

2005 Publication in “Good Taste” magazine, Wine of the Month Club, in flight

magazine for Nation Wide Airlines.

2006 Exhibited at Investment Art Gallery, Cape Town.

2008 January: Adlou Art Gallery.

2008 Exhibited at Stellenbosch Gallery November Gala featuring SA

contemporary artists and masters.

2008 September. Sold works to a collector in London on

2009 December. Gained international recognition. Exhibited by special invitation at the 7th Florence Biennale

2009 December. Made sketch studies of the Michelangelo ‘David’ marble in Florence and visited the Duomo Museum to view Donetello’s ‘Madaleina’ and Michelangelo’s unfinished ‘Pieta’.

2009 December. Spent five days in Paris to visit the Museé D’Orsay and Monet’s “Water Lillies’.

2009 December. Visited the National Gallery in London to view a special exhibition of 15th Century Spanish Religious art of life-sized carvings and the paintings of Du Zubaran.

2010 July. Exhibited at David Zetler’s ‘Winter Gala’ at the Hout Street Gallery. Paarl.

2013 May. Exhibited at Cherie De Villiers Gallery. Hyde Park Corner. Johannesburg.

Art Statement

Art is the universal language of the heart. Anybody can learn to understand it if they take the time. It’s the root culture of any nation that invests faithfully in education. Without art in all it's forms, a nation is barbaric.
